Harold Speed on Flat and Gradated Tones
Harold Speed on Flat and Gradated Tones
Welcome to the GJ Book Club. Today well cover pages 187-192 of the chapter on "Tone and Colour Design," from Harold Speeds 1924 art instruction book Oil Painting Techniques and Materials
.
Ill present Speeds main points in boldface type either verbatim or paraphrased, followed by my comments. If you want to add a comment, please use the numbered points to refer to the relevant section of the chapter.
1. Gradated and Flat Tones
Speed covered this topic in his book on drawing as well. He suggests planning the picture in flat tones and to "let your gradations be the result of such tones melting into each other where necessary." Form that is conceived in planar terms has more vigor, he argues, compared to smoothly curving form, which can start looking effete or feeble.
Turner - Norham Castle Sunrise |
Speed says that a good place to put gradations is in the edges between the big flat shapes. "The larger the number of these lost edges the more gracious the expression, and the larger the number of hard edges, the more forceful and less gracious the expression." As with all painterly aesthetics, an intelligent mix of both is the best bet.
3. Range of Tone
Heres another principle: "The smaller the range of tone used, the quieter and more peaceful the result." In the Turner sunrise painting, the values are kept close and the edges are kept soft, creating a gentle effect, like a shimmering tremolo on the violin. Note that he didnt use pure white for the sun, but shifted hue and chroma from a light gray sky to a high-chroma yellow sun. The piece is high in key and is saved by the solitary dark accent of the cow (or is it a horse? I cant tell).
Whether Turner pushes his effects too far in his late work is a matter of taste; I prefer his earlier work where the effects are more understated. I think Frederic Church is better at Turner than Turner is.
The reverse is also effective: a mostly dark painting with a single light accent, as with the Bierstadt nocturne below:
![]() |
Bierstadt Ships at Night |
![]() |
Giorgiones Holy Family with Saints |
Note the central position of the Madonna, but the varied handling of the flanking figures.

5. Giorgiones FĂȘte ChampĂȘtre (Pastoral Concert)
Speed admires the wide range of tone without dramatic edge contrasts. Contrast between gentle form modeling on figures to staccato accents on the drapery.

6. Poussins Flight into Egypt
Speed seems to greatly admire this painting. He analyzes the piece by sketching a tone plan and a diagram of line rhythms, and he breaks down the composition in tonal terms. Personally, I dont see this as being a very exemplary work. It has so many confused centers of interest and awkward, stiff passages. What is the baby Jesus most worried about: the concrete clouds, the heavy handed foreshadowing, or his distracted parents? Sorry, Ive just never been a big fan of Poussin.

Heartbleed Bug Week Two Affected Website Testing and The Other Shoe
Heartbleed Bug Week Two Affected Website Testing and The Other Shoe

[UPDATED 2014-04-17 ~11:00 AM ET. A link to Mashables list of affected websites was added.]
This is week two of the Heartbleed bug and its ramifications. A lot has been learned. A lot is still happening. A lot more problems are still to come.
Im extremely disappointed that few websites have directly addressed this problem and kept their customers informed. Apparently, security is still considered a minor inconvenience to website administrators, with a wide variety of responses to the Heartbleed security hole, as youll see ahead.
TEST PAGES
Thankfully, there are now some very good resources for finding out whether specific websites remain affected. Here is a list of six pages I know of where you can test any website against the Heartbleed bug. Try them in the order of usefulness Ive provided below. If one test errors out, try the next one.
http://watchtower.agilebits.com
https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/
http://www.digicert.com/help/
http://heartbleed.criticalwatch.com
https://lastpass.com/heartbleed/
Thanks to Brian Krebs for getting the ball rolling collecting these sites. Ill add more to this list as I find them. Note that using these test pages can be annoying and disconcerting. On some test pages, I ran into errors of various sorts about 50% of the time.
TEST RESULTS
Fortunately, lists of FAILed websites are showing up on the net, saving us some time and trouble. Here is one at Github, listing affected websites as of April 8th, 2014, the day after the SSL security hole was made public. Scroll down its page to Overview to see the list:
https://github.com/musalbas/heartbleed-masstest
NOTE: Many of the sites on this out-of-date list have now been patched! Yahoo, for example, made a big deal out of patching its website in a hurry.
Mashable has also provided a listing of affected websites here. Note that it is also out-of-date:
http://mashable.com/2014/04/09/heartbleed-bug-websites-affected/
At the time I wrote this article, many sites had still not been patched. Heres one unhappy example:

And so forth.
NOW WHAT?
So! Are we ready to change our passwords at all the websites that verify as having patched their OpenSSL implementations?
Yes! Do it!
But! Theres another problem! Remember how I pointed out last week that phishing is going to result from the Heartbleed bug? The phishing problem may become doubly bad:
THE OTHER SHOE DROPS

Because, as I pointed out last week, Heartbleed can allow the cleartext robbery of website security certificates, ALL security certificates at affected sites MUST BE REVOKED and REPLACED.
Why? Because with a stolen SSL security certificate, a hacker can pretend to officially BE the website from which the certificate was stolen! Thats VERY bad and will lead to lots of troubles. Its also ignorant, lazy and cheapskate of the websites administrators.
It turns out that remarkably few websites have so far revoked their potentially stolen security certificates! Welcome to our modern world of bad biznizz. :-P Insert your favorite expletives here: [_____]
Lets use an example!
HAPPY RESULTS
Use a GOOD web browser that actually CHECKS Internet security certificates for credibility. One such browser is good old Apple Safari! Bravo Apple! Each time you visit a website, Safari checks the security certificate for that website against a number of factors. One of them is whether that certificate is on a Certificate Revocation List (CRL).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revocation_list
When you visit a website that has had its security certificate revoked, you get a message in Safari!
This past week, mentor Steve Gibson very kindly set up the perfect place to show what it looks like when you run into a revoked security certificate. Travel here to see Steves demonstration:
https://www.grc.com/revocation.htm
In a box, slightly down the page, youll see his test page link. Click on it:
https://revoked.grc.com
What youll see in Safari is:

If you then click on the Show Certificate button, you will see this:

Therefore, you hit the Cancel button and leave the site. Theres something profoundly wrong with it, danger, danger. Do not go there. Thank you Safari!

Lets say we live in Turkey and get an email we believe is from the Istanbul branch of HypoVereinsbank, where we have all our life savings stored. The email message says something like:
Dear Valued Customer,Great! A deal! They offered up the link to their website within the message! How convenient.
We are offering a new 5% back on purchases feature to select account holders. To sign up for this new perk, please log into your HypoVereinsbank.co.tr account and click the Join the 5% Back Club button on the page.
Hurry now! Limited time offer! Dont let this deal pass you by! Prices do not include shipping and handling.
[If you check out the actual web address behind HypoVereinsbank account, youll find that Ive faked a different IP address that is NOT HypoVereinsbank! In reality, Ive provided a LAN IP link that goes nowhere on the Internet, making in innocuous. But I could put anything there. Note that I am NOT picking on HypoVereinsbank in Turkey. Im only using them as a valid example of a bank that had not patched the Heartbleed bug at the time of this writing.]
So we click the link to HypoVereinsbank.co.tr. Were sent to the FAKE website for the bank. Were presented with everything looking just perfect and fine. Safari sees NO problems! The stolen, unrevoked certificate is presented to Safari, all his happy.
UH OH.
Then we log in, our ID and password are stolen, we possibly get asked a bunch of other personal identity questions in order to sign up for the FAKE 5% Back Club offer. We have been PWNed.
THEREFORE:
Its important that ALL Heartbleed bug affected websites revoke their old security certificates and get new certificates. ALL.
Enough of that nightmare for today.
CONCLUSION, for now:
1) Check out what websites have been affected by the Heartbleed bug.
2) Check out whether those websites are NOW patched.
3) Change your password there ASAP.
4) Keep an eye out for potential phishing scams using stolen security certificates.
THE FUTURE
Hopefully well see forced revocation of security certificates via certificate authorities against all websites that have been affected by the Heartbleed bug. That move would save we Internet users a lot of grief.

How to Install GVIM a powerful text editor in Ubuntu 11 04 Natty Narwhal 10 10 and 10 04
How to Install GVIM a powerful text editor in Ubuntu 11 04 Natty Narwhal 10 10 and 10 04
GVIM is the graphical "implementation" of the command-line text editor (an IDE actually) called the Vim. Although may not certainly be as "connected" as with the GNU EMacs, but Vim text editor also has a quite long history with GNU/Linux thus it comes pre-installed by default in almost all the GNU/Linux distributions.
But for the obvious reason of not having a GUI, Vim (which is also based on another editor called "Vi") is not that popular among the typical GNU/Linux users but other advanced boys and gals such as system administrators still use it quite often since it allows us to edit any text (+ editing programming language code files) file without having to log-into a graphical user interface to this day nonetheless.
In short, it a GUI written using the GTK+ tool-kit (aimed at Gnome desktop, but you can use it in any desktop you want), but since it uses the Vim as the "engine", youll be getting almost all of its features in a very user-friendly graphical environment!.
Main features...

*. Change font (size, bold, italic, etc).
*. Find and replace.

*. Undo/Redo.
*. Automatic spell checking.
*. Open multiple windows by splitting the window by horizontal or vertically.
*. A "file explorer" of its own which lets you locate and load files to the window for editing.
![]() |
The "command-line" type, file explorer to the left... |
*. Text wrap.
*. Send to print... are among the features that interests the standard users.
As mentioned, Vim is actually a programmer friendly text editor, thus GVIM also lets you do other things like Syntax editing, set compilers, "Make" files (compiling), etc which are again, not that useful for the usual users.
You can install GVIM in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, 10.10 and 10.04 by using the below command in your Terminal window.
sudo apt-get install vim-gtk
But, just like with GNU/Emacs, this is not for everyone. For instance, if you enter its settings window, then almost all the settings are activated using commands! rather than graphical tools.
But still, if you usually deal with a lot of Syntax editing or HTML/XML editing... then GVIM is a fast and feature-rich front-end to the original Vim "engine" nonetheless.
But as a final verdict, in my humble opinion, if youre looking for something to replace the Gedit type text editor for instance, then you should have a look at something like the Leafpad or Mousepad or even the awesome FocusWriter will certainly suite rather than the GVIM.

How to Import mail and contacts from Yahoo Mail to Gmai
How to Import mail and contacts from Yahoo Mail to Gmai
How to Import mail and contacts from Yahoo Mail to Gmai

Importing data from one email service provider to another can be time-consuming and complicated, with lots of glitches. But it doesnt have to be that way. If you want to switch from Yahoo Mail to Gmail and import your contacts and mailbox contents, Gmail has made this process easier than ever.
Heres how to switch from Yahoo to Gmail:
1. Open the Gmail account andclick the gear icon placed on the top right of the page.2. After clicking on the settings button, youll see settings in the dropdown list. Click on it.

3. After that click on the Accounts and Import Tab.You will find it in the middle of the page.

4. Then click on Import mail and contacts. It will then ask you for the password; enter the password of your yahoo account.

5. Decide the import option that you want to use. You will have to chose from options; import all your contacts, and old mail, or some portion of thereof.

Only current messages will be imported from the inbox and will be automatically labeled with the name of your yahoo account.

Tips & Warnings
- After four months of an account receiving no activity, Yahoo! deactivates that account, so if you intend to keep your Yahoo! account alive for an extended period, be sure to log in every week or so.
- Check your old Yahoo! account on occasion to make sure that no one important is sending email to that address. Alert anyone who is sending mail to that account to update their address book to reflect your new address.

How to Install Sysinfo in Ubuntu 11 04 Natty Narwhal 10 10 and 10 04
Although Ive already talked about a PC hardware information "gatherer" for GNU/Linux called Hardinfo which is pretty darn good btw. But for one main reason I quite liked another one called Sysinfo because of its simplicity and well designed "categorized data structure" (didnt know how else to put it :D).
The main GUI of Sysinfo is very minimalistic yet the application itself looks very professional. It has a nice Welcome screen (animated, well, who cares!, but that "approach" a bit rare in GNU/Linux apps, dont ya think? ;-) ) and all the hardware of your PC/Laptop are categorized quite nicely to the left side of the screen too.
Main features...

*. Has five (5) basic categories - System, CPU, Memory, Storage and Hardware.
*. Shows a huge list of information related to both your Hardware and software such as the desktop version and its kind (Gnome, KDE, Xfce and LXDE, etc).

*. Memory Usage and Swap space, Cached memory, etc.

*. Under storage youll find all the storage details such as HDD, CD/DVD drives, USB or SCSI drive BIOS versions, vendor, capacities, etc.
*. If you want more information, then just click on the "Hardware" tab and you can either choose from the drop down menu (as shown in the below screenshot) to filter out certain hardware, etc with ease as well.

You can install Sysinfo in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, 10.10 and 10.04 by using the below command in your Terminal window.
sudo apt-get install sysinfo
After the installation you can run it from: "Applications" -> "System Tools" - "Sysinfo" or just press "Alt" + "F2" keys and enter the below command into the box and press enter.
sysinfoThats it. Hope this was helpful.

Google Keep note taking app gets labels for easier organizing and recurring reminders
Google Keep note taking app gets labels for easier organizing and recurring reminders
Google Keep, Googles easy to use note taking app, is a great resource for students and teachers. It just received a new feature that helps with organizing your notes, labels, and recurring reminders.
This makes organizing your notes/tasks/reminders easier. You can add as many labels as you like to a note to track it by tasks, project, category, etc. Along with color coding, you can really organize your notes better.
You can also now set recurring reminders. Reminders can be set by location (great for reminding you to do something when you get to a certain place, if you dont know what time you will get there) and by day/time. You can also set recurring reminders as daily, weekly, monthly or yearly or even create your own interval.
Keep also has the ability to share notes, create tasks lists, and even audio notes.

I use Evernote for most things, but also use Keep for quick notes on the go and for shopping lists, along with voice notes, and then I can share the notes to other apps, or just access them as needed. Its quicker than Evernote, but has less features. It is useful for students and teachers.

Harold Speed on Unity and Variety
Harold Speed on Unity and Variety
Today well cover pages 181-187 of the chapter on "Tone and Colour Design," from Harold Speeds 1924 art instruction book Oil Painting Techniques and Materials
. This is another very long section of the book that well have to break into parts.
Ill present Speeds main points in boldface type either verbatim or paraphrased, followed by my comments. If you want to add a comment, please use the numbered points to refer to the relevant section of the chapter.
Andrew Wyeth The Sleepers |
The distinction between expression and communication is an important one, since the latter requires someone to receive the message. Expression can happen when an artist is all alone on the beach writing something on the sand. One thing the Internet has given artists is the ability to see right away how their work is received by real people. I dont know if being conscious of the audiences reaction is a good thing or a bad thing, but it sure is a thing. Its hard to ignore the audience and I wonder how it affects us in the long run.
2. Natural appearance vs. rhythm
Speed is setting up a distinction between something that looks convincingly real and a something that uses design principles to have an effective emotional impact. These two objectives in painting arent necessarily in opposition. The way I think about it is that there are many kinds of realism, or many ways to paint something so that it looks convincingly real. You might for example focus on the texture or the atmospherics or the silhouette or the warm glowing colors, or whatever expresses your idea. And then there are all the qualities of paint handling. Each of us has to choose which type of realism best serves the idea.
3. Page 184, paragraph beginning: "It is not rather that...." Speed says: "We are continually seeking to transform the things of this existence into terms of this inner, more permanent realm."
Speed gets philosophical here, and the language is a bit difficult to unravel, but what hes saying is profound, connecting the world of our inner mental life with the external world that we perceive and interpret through art. Andrew Wyeth talks a lot about this. He doesnt head out looking for a scene to paint. He starts with an inner idea and builds it from the inside out. The result may be realistic to the eye, but it all starts with dreams and memories.
.jpg)
Tone Design
4. Flat tones create unity. A lot of light-to-dark modeling can create variety.
In the Raphael above, theres a lot of modeling within each form, and each form is distinguished from its surrounding background, creating a choppy effect. Thomas Hart Benton also has a tendency to define his forms all the way around. The tones are much more unified in the Cornwell below. One is not necessarily better than the other.
Image: Dean Cornwell |
5. For broader effect, "assemble the light masses together and unite the dark masses also, so that the light and dark tones, instead of playing together throughout the picture, are divided and grouped separately."
Hey, this sounds like shapewelding, something that I discussed in a previous post.
Speed says: "This is why portrait painters so favour a dark background, as it so easily makes the light head the dominating interest in the picture."

Google Pack software free tools and utilities
Google Pack software free tools and utilities
What is Google Software Pack?
Google software pack is a free collection of software from one of the worlds biggest IT companies. The collection includes useful software for everyone including web developers. In fact, a few of the software is essential for web developers.
The Google software Pack offers utilities for image management, virus scanning, spyware and adware detection and removal, internet browsing, searching, voice, video and IM communication and much more.
Google Pack includes essential software for web developers
According to me the five essential software for web developers included in the Google software pack are the Chrome and Firefox web browsers, Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer, Google Desktop and Skype. And why do I think these are so important... read on.
Google free web browser Chrome was not a part of this software collection till it came out of the beta version. however, its now the first program in the list and carries a check mark by default. This is one browser you HAVE to check out, especially, if you are a web developer - experienced or a newbie. Chrome offers an uncluttered work space with no distracting icons and uncessary buttons. In fact, the one text field at the top allows you to enter both URL and search query (searches performed using the Google search engine) - really neat!
The usage of the Firefox browser has been steadily increasing - statistics from this web site show that more than 40% visitors surf the web with Firefox. No web developer or web designer worth his/her salt can be without this browser. It is imperative that when you design a web site you not only check it in Internet Explorer but also Firefox web browser. The tons of free Firefox Addons make it a must have software. The Google Toolbar, which comes with Firefox, but has to be installed for Internet Explorer is an indispensable tool. In addition to a pop-up blocker, AutoFill (saves you time, as you no longer need to fill up online forms each time), SpellCheck (helps you correct typos and spelling errors), the Google Toolbar has some really nifty things for web developers. The one I like the most is the Enhanced Search Box in which you can type your query directly and search the Google database. The new feature of this search box is that it offers "useful suggestions based on popular Google searches". Now these suggested queries may help you fine tune your keywords (this is not to challenge the fabulous Google Adwords Keywords Tool). The other two favorite elements of the Google Toolbar that I really like are PageRank Display (all web developers know this or should know about the Google PageRank) and Bookmarks with which you can "create and label bookmarks that you can access from any computer".
The Google Desktop is one great piece of software. The main reason I first installed it was to have a better search tool on my computer - to replace the Search feature provided with Windows. But man... this is way-way more than a simple search tool. It has these little elements called the Google Gadgets like the Scratch Pad and To Do list that I now cannot live without.
Skype is a communications software tool and if you dont have it (or worse, dont know about it), you are missing out on a lot of time+money savings as well as fun. I use Skype (and Google Talk, which is another software that comes with the Google Pack) regularly to keep in touch with my customers (who are in 7 different countries). No more emailing and waiting for a reply and then emailing again. With Skype I can make calls to my customers telephone line for pittance. By the way, Skype to Skype calls are 100% free. So if you have your friends/relatives residing abroad you can ask them to install this software on their systems and then you would be able to talk endlessly... and its free!

The mobile version of Vice City will boast brand new high definition graphics and will take advantage of current technology. Several brand new enhancements will be exclusive to the iOS and Android versions of the game. "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City gave players the freedom of a massive open-world in one of the most iconic and vibrant settings ever realized in a game. It was a defining moment in the series and were delighted to be celebrating its 10th anniversary this year with a stunning, updated version for phones and tablets."
Its a pity that Rockstar did not include a release date for the new mobile version of Vice City, but later this fall instead.

About GTA: Vice City
Welcome to Vice City. Welcome to the 1980s.
Having just made it back onto the streets of Liberty City after a long stretch in maximum security, Tommy Vercetti is sent to Vice City by his old boss, Sonny Forelli. They were understandably nervous about his re-appearance in Liberty City, so a trip down south seemed like a good idea. But all does not go smoothly upon his arrival in the glamorous, hedonistic metropolis of Vice City. Hes set up and is left with no money and no merchandise. Sonny wants his money back, but the biker gangs, Cuban gangsters, and corrupt politicians stand in his way. Most of Vice City seems to want Tommy dead. His only answer is to fight back and take over the city himself.
From the decade of big hair, excess and pastel suits comes a story of one mans rise to the top of the criminal pile.
