How to Make Your Own 3D Glasses at Home

You’ll need a pair of 3D glasses with red and blue (to be more precise, cyan) lenses to watch any of the 3D videos that are available on YouTube or this pool of 3D images (anaglyphs) that’s on Flickr.

Create 3-D Glasses at Home!

The basic 3D glasses are available for around 10$ and above but if you want them right now, you can build your own using a spare CD jewel case and some permanent marker pens.

Just scribble the transparent side of the jewel case with red and blue marker pens large enough to cover the width of your eyes. The blue (or cyan) color lens is for the right eye while the red color will cover the left eye.

Alternatively, you may use an existing pair of sun-glasses and replace the lenses with colored sheets of transparent plastic. Or pick an old pair of eyeglasses and fill the left and right lenses with red and blue permanent markers respectively.

Hacking The Internet Of Things Or Superenigmatix When Your Home Appliances Turn Against You

This is an alert to a new phenomenon of hacking: Botting your home appliances, aka "The Internet of Things." This revelation is both hilarious AND scary.

Making devices more secure can add time to product development....

Security researchers fear that the risks presented by these new types of gadgets are especially concerning. If hackers can exploit a weakness in a single type of Internet-connected home appliance or system—such as an Internet-connected door lock—they may be able to harm thousands of people at once. “It might be some effort to get this kind of scenario, but if breaking into one server means you get to ransack 100, 1,000, 10,000 people’s homes, that’s definitely worth it, and that’s where the real danger lies,” Crowley says.

Smart refrigerators and TVs hacked to send out spam, according to a new report

Security firm Proofpoint has uncovered a cyberattack that involved the hacking of “smart” home appliances connected to the Internet. Hackers broke into more than 100,000 gadgets -- including TVs, multimedia centers, routers, and at least one fridge – and used the appliances to send out more than 750,000 malicious emails between December 23 and January 6....

Perhaps worse: In “many cases,” the smart devices weren’t difficult to hack, according to Proofpoint. Instead, the appliances either were not set up correctly, or they used default passwords that were easy to find on public networks.

Incorrectly setup home devices? Thats nothing new! I believe Ive written here previously about my hacking into a neighbors router to change their radio band setting to my leaching benefit! Once, I even had an IT professional argue with me that password encryption protecting of his home router was not important. He learned otherwise.

As the number of such connected devices is expected to grow to more than four times the number of connected computers in the next few years according to media reports, proof of an IoT-based attack has significant security implications for device owners and Enterprise targets....

What astounds me is that the operating systems, memory and CPUs on these devices are powerful enough to even BE botted! Is this embedded system OVERKILL? I think so.

Cyber criminals intent on stealing individual identities and infiltrating enterprise IT systems have found a target-rich environment in these poorly protected internet connected devices that may be more attractive and easier to infect and control than PC, laptops, or tablets.

This is SERIOUS Version 1.0 Syndrome. Oh dear!

The attack that Proofpoint observed and profiled occurred between December 23, 2013 and January 6, 2014, and featured waves of malicious email, typically sent in bursts of 100,000, three times per day, targeting Enterprises and individuals worldwide. More than 25 percent of the volume was sent by things that were not conventional laptops, desktop computers or mobile devices; instead, the emails were sent by everyday consumer gadgets such as compromised home-networking routers, connected multi-media centers, televisions and at least one refrigerator....

"Many of these devices are poorly protected at best and consumers have virtually no way to detect or fix infections when they do occur. Enterprises may find distributed attacks increasing as more and more of these devices come on-line and attackers find additional ways to exploit them." . . . .

"The Internet of Things holds great promise for enabling control of all of the gadgets that we use on a daily basis. It also holds great promise for cybercriminals who can use our homes routers, televisions, refrigerators and other Internet-connected devices to launch large and distributed attacks", said Michael Osterman, principal analyst at Osterman Research. "Internet-enabled devices represent an enormous threat because they are easy to penetrate, consumers have little incentive to make them more secure, the rapidly growing number of devices can send malicious content almost undetected, few vendors are taking steps to protect against this threat, and the existing security model simply wont work to solve the problem."

Oh great! No user incentive to make their Internet of Things more secure. Bot wranglers must be in ecstasy!

My first question when a friend (Hi Nick!) pointed out this news was What manufacturers make these insecure refrigerators?!

I have yet to find a decent list of smart (or perhaps stupid is more descriptive) appliance manufacturers. But it turns out that companies involved in the technology end of The Internet of Things are vast! Here is one ongoing list:

Obviously, this is going to be an enormous subject in 2014, if not for years. Keep an eye out as the botnet of The Internet of Things develops.

This PWNed home appliance phenomenon reminds me of two things. The first is a philosophy and the second is a song:

I know there is some argument about the actual facts of the Luddite movement and its meaning. But Luddite has nonetheless become the single most popular term for anyone motivated to turn their back on technological progress. I also know that using this term is a great way to raise the hair of any tyrannical technologist.

There are a number of sci-fi books using the theme of Ludditism. One I recently read was The Difference Engine by none other than William Gibson and Bruce Sterling.

With the catastrophe of ones router, oven, refrigerator, door lock, home entertainment, lighting and alarm systems all conspiring against you, can you imagine the lash-back from certain users whod rather just go back to the old ways? I certainly can!

The Song

From back when I was a kid, one of my favorite music mavens is Bill Nelson, formerly of the group BeBop Deluxe. In 1978 he wrote the first of his hyperactive future-paranoia albums entitled Drastic Plastic. My favorite song from the album, the one that best summarized his artistic theme at the time, was Superenigmatix (Lethal Appliances for the Home with Everything). Here, for your reading pleasure, are the lyrics. Note their significance to the current plight of The Internet of Things:

Hi there. My name is Jackie. And like most people, I have a story.
However, mine is not an easy story to tell.
Truth is, it’s kind of hard for me to admit this here on such a public forum, but it’s also not easy to hide from the truth.
So, I’m gonna tell it to you anyway. So, here it is:
A few years ago I let myself get fat, out of shape and miserable.
There were lots of reasons I started on that downward spiral away from myself …
… relationship troubles…
… a job I hated…
… an illness in the family …
… and all happening at the same time …
…all made me feel like nothing was going right for me or ever would go right for me again.
I felt like I’d lost control over my life, my happiness and myself.
Add all of that to my other big problem, which was:
Going where all those judgmental, super-fit people might stare at me while I struggled to get in shape made me feel
REALLY
uncomfortable and conspicuous.
I didn’t like dealing with the rude, inconsiderate people that always seemed to be in my way there …
… or leaving their sweat on the equipment I wanted to work on and not putting their stuff back where it belongs when they’re done.
It was frustrating.
Besides all that, I really didn’t have a bunch of extra time to waste in my busy day just getting there and back anyway.
And for what it was, I felt like a gym membership was just way too expensive, especially since I didn’t even like going there.
So I just refused to go.
And since I live in a teensy, tiny city apartment I didn’t *think* there could be an effective way to get in shape at home with my extreme space limitations.
Worst of all, I started turning to food for comfort. Fattening and unhealthy food.
So, yup. I got heavy.
Being unhappy and sedentary can do that to you.
Oops.
And this only added to my feelings of being lost and out of control.
But, then one day, after being miserable and uncomfortable in my own skin and feeling out of control for WAY TOO LONG, I got mad enough at myself that I decided I’d have to find a way to get in shape without the gym.
I knew I had to take control of myself and my life and get my mindset turned around, or the problem was only going to get worse.
THAT’S when I began putting this fat loss system together for myself.
I was fed up being fat and unhappy and I decided to take control and do something about it.
I spent a lot of time experimenting with lots of different workout techniques and styles. I had successes… and I had failures.
But I kept at it until I had perfected a system that allowed me to get in the shape I wanted AT HOME with minimal equipment and IN A HURRY.

Heres My Candle Making Story

It started with my grandmother...

My mom grew up on a farm. We often
visited my grandparents there when I was growing up (the family farm is long gone, but the memories are as great as
ever).
My grandmother was a classic, hard-working farm woman. Every spring and
summer she would make huge pots of jam, and then can enough to last the family all year.
Nothing fancy - plain raspberry
and strawberryare the only ones I remember her making.
But those jams are still the
bestI’ve ever had. (So were her sour cream cookies.)
She canned the old-fashioned way,
using paraffin wax to seal the jars. That meant there were always boxes of paraffin around the farmhouse (usually
stacked in the basement next to the jam).
I think I was around eight or so
when I read on one of the boxes that you could also use the paraffin to make candles. This was a revelation to me.
I asked my grandmother if I could try it.
She set me up with an empty coffee
can as a double boiler. My first mold was a cardboard milk carton and the wick was a plain piece of
string.
I smile now when I think about
that first candle. I suspect the reality is that it was pretty darn ugly, but in my memory it was spectacular. I
was absolutely thrilled at how it turned out.
I made candles fairly regularly
for a few years after that. I used different home made molds and tried different techniques, but I never really
graduated much beyond canning wax and the coffee can double boiler. (To give you an idea, one of the techniques I
experimented with back then was to use half-gallon paper milk carton filled with coarse chunks of ice as a mold.
The ice would stay solid long enough for the hot wax to flow around. When the ice melted it would leave the candle
riddled with interesting cavities. I havent tried it recently, but I thought it was pretty cool at the
time.)

Then high school and college came
along and I let candle making slide.

But my love of candles
persisted.

I love the look of them, the
scent of them, and most of all the soft ambience that candle light adds to a home. I honestly cant imagine
entertaining without candles in the room.
So Ive
always
had a lot of
candles around. But I always had to buy them.

That changed couple of years
ago

when my wife and one of her friends dragged
me into a gift shop we walked by on our way to a restaurant.
This shop had quite a nice
collection of candles, with prices to match. It wasnt the first time I thought that candle prices were high and
remembered making my own as a kid. It had been happening more and more thatas I bought candles, I thought
that I could probably do as well or better for a lot less.
Well, on this particular evening I
said as much.
To make a long story short, I
found myself accepting a dare to make a candle as nice as one you would buy.

It Wasnt As Easy As I Remembered...

The next day, I started my candle making
research.

I expected to do a little online
research, visit a craft store, make a couple of gorgeous candles that night and then collect on my
bet.
It didnt work out that
way.
Just picking a wax was almost
overwhelming!

I discovered that even
paraffin candle wax isnt thesimple wax of my childhood - theyre all kinds of variations and
refinements, each with specific characteristics and applications.
Not only that, I came across
references to beeswax and other
waxes I had never heard of:
soy wax, palm oil wax, gel waxes and
more.
Then there wasall the
information about the importance of the proper wick... how to use dyes… what to look out for if youre going to use
fragrance…
It was a lot more complicated
than I remembered.

I sorted through the
information as best I could and gave it a try. The first attempts were only okay. After more tedious research and
trial and error I finally produced candles I could proudly show to my wife and her friend (my wife was good enough
not to mention how many attempts it had taken).
Even though it was a rough start,
I was hooked on candle making again.
I have to admit, though, that if I
hadnt been trying to win a bet I probably wouldve given up after the first couple of attempts - it was just that
frustrating. However, once I had the technique down it was easy to reproduce.

once you

I remember thinking at the time I

Early on, I bought a very nice mold
for a 4" pillar candle. When I first made a candle with it I used paraffin wax with a bit of hardener, red tint and
no fragrance - pretty straight forward.

Everything went smoothly
until the next day when I tried to get the candle out of the mold. It just wouldnt budge. I just couldnt get it
out. No matter what.

In frustration,
Iresorted tousing a knife to separate the candle from the mold. Bad idea. Not only did the candle look
like it had been attacked with a hatchet, I severely scratched the mold, essentially ruining it - any candles made
in it from there on would show those scratches.

when I eventually learned that the solution to that problem is to put themold in the freezer for 10 minutes
or so. The candle will pop right out. No ruined mold or anything.

would give the people I taughtto save them time and frustration (not to mention sparing them ruined candle
molds). Simple and effective and easy
if you know it
, but hard to learn on your own.

Before long, someone I was
