Hacking The Internet Of Things Or Superenigmatix When Your Home Appliances Turn Against You

This is an alert to a new phenomenon of hacking: Botting your home appliances, aka "The Internet of Things." This revelation is both hilarious AND scary.

Security researchers fear that the risks presented by these new types of gadgets are especially concerning. If hackers can exploit a weakness in a single type of Internet-connected home appliance or system—such as an Internet-connected door lock—they may be able to harm thousands of people at once. “It might be some effort to get this kind of scenario, but if breaking into one server means you get to ransack 100, 1,000, 10,000 people’s homes, that’s definitely worth it, and that’s where the real danger lies,” Crowley says.

Smart refrigerators and TVs hacked to send out spam, according to a new report

Security firm Proofpoint has uncovered a cyberattack that involved the hacking of “smart” home appliances connected to the Internet. Hackers broke into more than 100,000 gadgets -- including TVs, multimedia centers, routers, and at least one fridge – and used the appliances to send out more than 750,000 malicious emails between December 23 and January 6....

Perhaps worse: In “many cases,” the smart devices weren’t difficult to hack, according to Proofpoint. Instead, the appliances either were not set up correctly, or they used default passwords that were easy to find on public networks.

Incorrectly setup home devices? Thats nothing new! I believe Ive written here previously about my hacking into a neighbors router to change their radio band setting to my leaching benefit! Once, I even had an IT professional argue with me that password encryption protecting of his home router was not important. He learned otherwise.

As the number of such connected devices is expected to grow to more than four times the number of connected computers in the next few years according to media reports, proof of an IoT-based attack has significant security implications for device owners and Enterprise targets....

What astounds me is that the operating systems, memory and CPUs on these devices are powerful enough to even BE botted! Is this embedded system OVERKILL? I think so.

Cyber criminals intent on stealing individual identities and infiltrating enterprise IT systems have found a target-rich environment in these poorly protected internet connected devices that may be more attractive and easier to infect and control than PC, laptops, or tablets.

This is SERIOUS Version 1.0 Syndrome. Oh dear!

The attack that Proofpoint observed and profiled occurred between December 23, 2013 and January 6, 2014, and featured waves of malicious email, typically sent in bursts of 100,000, three times per day, targeting Enterprises and individuals worldwide. More than 25 percent of the volume was sent by things that were not conventional laptops, desktop computers or mobile devices; instead, the emails were sent by everyday consumer gadgets such as compromised home-networking routers, connected multi-media centers, televisions and at least one refrigerator....

"Many of these devices are poorly protected at best and consumers have virtually no way to detect or fix infections when they do occur. Enterprises may find distributed attacks increasing as more and more of these devices come on-line and attackers find additional ways to exploit them." . . . .

"The Internet of Things holds great promise for enabling control of all of the gadgets that we use on a daily basis. It also holds great promise for cybercriminals who can use our homes routers, televisions, refrigerators and other Internet-connected devices to launch large and distributed attacks", said Michael Osterman, principal analyst at Osterman Research. "Internet-enabled devices represent an enormous threat because they are easy to penetrate, consumers have little incentive to make them more secure, the rapidly growing number of devices can send malicious content almost undetected, few vendors are taking steps to protect against this threat, and the existing security model simply wont work to solve the problem."

Oh great! No user incentive to make their Internet of Things more secure. Bot wranglers must be in ecstasy!

My first question when a friend (Hi Nick!) pointed out this news was What manufacturers make these insecure refrigerators?!

I have yet to find a decent list of smart (or perhaps stupid is more descriptive) appliance manufacturers. But it turns out that companies involved in the technology end of The Internet of Things are vast! Here is one ongoing list:

Obviously, this is going to be an enormous subject in 2014, if not for years. Keep an eye out as the botnet of The Internet of Things develops.

This PWNed home appliance phenomenon reminds me of two things. The first is a philosophy and the second is a song:

The Philosophy

I know there is some argument about the actual facts of the Luddite movement and its meaning. But Luddite has nonetheless become the single most popular term for anyone motivated to turn their back on technological progress. I also know that using this term is a great way to raise the hair of any tyrannical technologist.

There are a number of sci-fi books using the theme of Ludditism. One I recently read was The Difference Engine by none other than William Gibson and Bruce Sterling.

With the catastrophe of ones router, oven, refrigerator, door lock, home entertainment, lighting and alarm systems all conspiring against you, can you imagine the lash-back from certain users whod rather just go back to the old ways? I certainly can!

From back when I was a kid, one of my favorite music mavens is Bill Nelson, formerly of the group BeBop Deluxe. In 1978 he wrote the first of his hyperactive future-paranoia albums entitled Drastic Plastic. My favorite song from the album, the one that best summarized his artistic theme at the time, was Superenigmatix (Lethal Appliances for the Home with Everything). Here, for your reading pleasure, are the lyrics. Note their significance to the current plight of The Internet of Things:

How to Make Sure You Sound Like a Person (Not a Robot) in an Interview

I once worked with a senior marketing executive. He was among the top candidates for a chief marketing officer role with one of my recruiting clients. On paper, he was impressive. In real life? Really great. Organized, focused, and one heck of a nice guy. I thought he would kill it throughout the interview process.

He made it one round.

One. Uno. I was shocked. I seriously thought this guy was going the distance.

I called the head of HR, and she told me exactly what had gone wrong.

In his fervor to be prepared to say just the right things, at just the right moment, every step of the way, something not-so-great happened to that senior marketing executive. He turned himself into an over-rehearsed, inauthentic robot. And the members of the executive team noticed, quickly.

(And not in a good way.)

So how do you avoid this moment? How do you make sure you walk into your next job interview ready to demonstrate that you’re professional, genuine, and likeable, without coming across as C3PO or, worse, some freewheeling cheeseball?

Here are four strategies to consider:

1. Prepare, But Don’t Memorize

Oh, heck yes you need to walk in to the interview prepared. This is not news. But “prepared” does not mean “I just memorized every last stinking question that could possibly be asked.” It’s far better to consider how your career story wraps around the questions you hear are always asked in interviews (ahem, Google “most common interview questions”) than to over-rehearse rote responses to all of them. It’s near impossible to come across as relaxed and authentic when you’re in hyper-vigilant mode waiting for the next question to come up.

2. Think P-I-E

Mmmmm, pie. No, seriously: P-I-E. It stands for passionate, interested, and engaged.

It’s the perfect acronym (and yes, it’s OK to memorize this one) to help ensure that you are a genuine, normal human being in your next interview. Correct answers don’t mean a thing (just ask that marketing exec) if you don’t look inspired to be there, totally dialed in to the conversation, and crazy about that thing that you do. Nail all three of these and you’re golden.

3. Choose Pause Over Babble

Quantity is most assuredly not always quality. If you don’t know quite how to answer a question, don’t try and cover it up with a tidal wave of words and sentences. You’re not going to overwhelm anyone into hiring you, for crying out loud. Instead, realize that it’s perfectly OK to pause and think for a second or two. It’s also OK to ask for clarification if you don’t quite understand what’s being asked.

Now, don’t sit there and stare down the poor person across the table for 2.5 minutes, but short, thoughtful pauses don’t make you weak; they make you real.

4. Take a Run-Through

You know that silly little saying, “Practice makes perfect?” Right, we’ve established by now that we’re not going for “perfect” here, but you can bet your bottom dollar you’ll be more at ease in that interview if you take a run-through or two prior to the big day. Ask a friend or family member whose opinion you value to spend 30 minutes with you. Give them a list of questions that you suspect might be asked. And then hit it.

After the mock interview, ask that person for honest feedback: How did you come across? How was your body language, your eye contact? Better yet, film the whole session and watch it for yourself a time or two in advance of the interview. Fine tune accordingly.

Arriving prepared for an interview is everything. But, you know what’s more likely to clinch it for you?

Arriving authentic.

How do you find time for personal art

I was asked this question by another professor during the interview for my job at BYU. Now that Ive been at BYU for almost a year, I understand that his question wasnt a test for the job, but an honest question about how to fit one more thing into an always-full schedule. The thing about being a professor is that you never clock in or out---your teaching and prep time, personal time, and freelance time all blend together and youre left to make your own calls about how to balance it all. I think I actually stammered my answer, something like "Well, uh, I just do it." That was a useless answer and I wish I could have a do-over.

I get summers off at BYU, which sounds awesome and laid-back, but in reality Im spending that time working on freelance character design, illustration, preparation for my classes, and various tasks around the house. I get to set my own schedule, but its always full no matter what order I put things into. What I thought would be a great break where I could do a lot of my own work has been just as busy as the semesters when Im teaching.

So Ive been thinking a lot about an answer Marcelo Vignali gave in a great interview with Bobby Chiu a while back. Answering a question about how he finds time for figure drawing, he said he makes figure drawing non-negotiable. In other words, he schedules time for it, and when that time comes, no other task takes priority, no matter how urgent (of course this doesnt apply to the house burning down scenario. Or maybe it does: guess I dont know Marcelo well enough to say for sure).

Ive taken that "non-negotiable" mindset with my personal art these last few months, and Im so glad I did. I have a block of time scheduled for it every morning---not much, just an hour---but its enough for me to chip away at stuff that comes out of my own head. I cant say Ive gotten to the point where its non-negotiable yet; there have been days when Ive skipped it for a big deadline, but Im getting pretty consistent. And amazingly, even slowly chipping away at it is deeply satisfying, and I find more energy for the jobs I have to do afterward. For me personally, it works best to not overthink what I use that time to paint on---sometimes an idea works out and sometimes it doesnt. Thats not the part that matters.

One of the paintings Ive been slowly chipping away at. Not because its worth painting, but because its good for me to sometimes paint stuff just for fun.

The reason for this post is that I know lots of artists personally who struggle to find time to draw or paint their own stuff. I know many skilled artists who havent done a piece of their own for months or even years. Most are people in the industry who by all appearance have completely full schedules. And yet as Ive scheduled in that time, I havent noticed a deficit anywhere else. Im somehow getting everything else done just fine. Maybe there was some slush time in my schedule that I didnt realize was there, or maybe that extra energy is making up for the lost time. Either way, if youre the person asking the question in the title, I recommend trying this. Doing your own art may not be urgent, but it is important, and if you treat it as if it is urgent, youll be better off.

Here’s A Timeline Of What Happens To Your Body When You Quit Smoking

If you’re smoking a cigarette right now, I have good news for you: if you don’t ever pick one up again, your body will go through amazing transformations within minutes of finishing your last one.

To reach this conclusion, researchers recruited 25 young men with various BMIs and gave them either an oxytocin nasal spray or a placebo. They were told to order breakfast from a menu and were then given two portions of whatever they asked for. The scientists then calculated the number of calories each man consumed during the meal. Two months later, the experiment was repeated, but this time those who received the placebo were given the oxytocin and vice-versa. The researchers found that, on average, those given the oxytocin spray consumed 122 fewer calories and 9 fewer grams of fat than those in the placebo group. Men in the oxytocin group also used more of their stored body fat for fuel than their counterparts and showed improved insulin sensitivity and an increase in metabolism.

Id dearly like your opinion on a certain matter and what I should do about it.
A couple of days ago I received an e-mail from a friend "Id rather not divulge
her name" stating she saw some of my textures posted elsewhere for downloading.
I visited the site and downloaded the texture set, after opening the file much to my
anger, the set was mine with my instructions/rules taken out and she/he put a folder
of crafts that can be bought from he/she. I cant believe the gall of some people.
